Read "The Stairs of Cirith Ungol"

At one point Frodo says, "You and I Sam are still stuck in the worst places in the story and it's all too likely that some will say at this point: Shut the book, Dad; we don't want to read any more."

But Sam's reply is heartening: "Maybe, but I wouldn't be one to say that. Things done and over and made into part of the great tales are different. Why, even Gollum might be good in a tale, better than he is to have by you anyway. And he used to like tales himself by his own account. I wonder whether he thinks he's the hero or the villain."

So the faithful Hobbits tread on, not even knowing that Shelob is ahead, but in the end their faithfulness to the task is rewarded and even Gollum plays a vital part in the tale, ultimately for the good.

May we remember John Paul II's words, "Be not afraid." In the first springtime of the Church there was no human power fueling it's growth. There was no political power, the early Christians didn't even have a vote (sort of like you, Owl). Yet those powerless men and women turned the world upside down.

I think the hardest thing is going to be reconciling with all of those brethren who voted against the advice of the bishops yesterday and especially dealing with the boasting and gloating today. I honestly believe that they voted as much out of fear as anything else. They voted out of fear of being duped again, out of contempt for the package of the political right, more than out of contempt for either the bishops or the unborn.

We need to be there when all of their dreams come crashing down around them as they almost certainly will to all who put their trust in princes.

I am trying to think of which English priest will be elected Pope and celebrate the last Mass, which leads to the ultimate revelation of glory.

Perhaps a P.P. from Brighton?

I was thinking more along the lines of the President of the Federation of European States in Michael D. O'Brien's "Father Elijah"...

Searching for something positive in this I have come up with one: this effectively eliminates Hillary from running in 2012!

"It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good"
