Pope to Priests: "Get Blogging!"

Well, he didn't put it exactly like that, but the Pontifical Council for Social Communications released today the theme for World Communications Day, which will be released on January 24th, the Feast of St. Francis de Sales, Patron of writers and journalists. It says that the Papal message will seek to "invite priests, in a particular way....to consider new media as a great resource for their ministry of service to the Word." Just as I was thinking it was time to give up the blog!

And how can you give it up when you're one of Il Papa's favorite reads?!

)And I hope Mrs. K. gets him a camera for Christmas too. Then he'll be incurable! I'm still torqued he had all those cool murals of Brother Dutton and some of his blog readers had NO CLUE until The Fr. Stretch Boyle got there to photograph them!

Owl,

“Our Lady of Kibeho” was a fine piece. Thank you. You took "the road less traveled" – and wrote a wonderful commentary on Mary - Hope and Our failure to stand up for the injustices and slaughter of innocent lives in Rwanda. Thank you.

…then I turned a few pages and read poor George…he is in my prayers.

Do you think VT receives more rainfall then England? It's got to be close.

Could it be that the Vatican is finally realising that new media offers the Church incredible opportunities to communicate its message? I'd like to think so, but I've reported on the Church and communications for too long to be optimistic. For even if Rome embraces new media, it still has to communicate clearly and in a language ordinary people understand. This means ditching jargon and pious cliches and finding fresh and imaginative ways to communicate the gospel. But we are still a long way from this.
